CARe Collegiate Academies Restorative Initiative

In the 2014-2015 school year, Collegiate Academies launched CARe, Collegiate Academies Restorative Initiative, a network-wide pilot program focused on non-traditional discipline methods, with the ultimate goal of increasing the time that students spend in school while reducing suspensions across our network.

In 2013-2014, the network had some of the highest suspension rates in the district. Collegiate Academies recognized discipline as an area of growth for the network and quickly created a pilot program modeled after some of the nation’s best restorative practices for schools.

Scholars are learning to own mistakes, fix them, and move forward. Scholars are no longer missing valuable academic work. While scholars are out of the classroom setting, they are focusing time in the restorative centers on school work as much as restoring relationships.

Since implementing CARe, we have seen the following results:

  • All three schools saw minimal suspensions last year. Suspension rates decreased to about 12% network wide compared to 56% in the 2013-2014 school year.
  • Attendance was up to 92% from 87% network wide in 13-14.
  • Grade point averages increased to 2.33 from 2.08 in 13-14.
